The Performing Arts Medicine MSc at UCL is a unique programme providing specialised training to clinicians interested or already involved in treating instrumental musicians, singers, dancers, actors and other performing artists.

Degree Information

The MSc covers key areas relating to performance-related musculoskeletal and neuromuscular injury, ergonomics, focal dystonias, performance psychology, pain management, assessment and rehabilitation of injury, the disabled performer, travelling and touring, the science of dance and music performance and clinical management of the professional voice. The curriculum is divided into modules which are delivered through lectures, workshops, clinics, visits to school and dance schools and attendance of rehearsals and performances. Teaching can be attended  full time (2 days per week for 2 semesters) or part time (1 day per week for 4 semesters) in order to accommodate the busy student who may have other professional or personal commitments.

Students undertake modules up to the value of 180 credits:

  • The MSc programme consists of eight compulsory modules (120 credits) and a research project with dissertation (60 credits).
  • A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits), and a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) is also offered.

  • Drugs and Disability within the Performing Arts World (MSc, PGDip)
  • Assessment and Rehabilitation of the Performing Artists (MSc, PGDip)
  • Research Methodology (MSc, PGDip)


Careers

Graduates gain in-depth knowledge of the diverse field of Performing Arts Medicine. Their specialised skills can be incorporated in their own professional practice or they can participate in performing arts clinics in various settings e.g. conservatoires, orchestras, music schools.

Graduates' knowledge and experience is valued and they may be invited as educators and trainers in Performing Arts Medicine and till become members of an ever-growing international medical community with common interest in the wellbeing of the performer.

Graduates may also progress to further academic study and research activity, such as a PhD.

Why study this degree at UCL?

No other programme currently exists in the UK and globally that brings together all elements of Performing Arts Medicine. This unique programme has been designed to provide a broad and diverse approach and encourage the students to actively participate in the Performing Arts Medicine community.

The programme is taught in conjunction with the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine, the Royal College of Music and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Clinics also are attended at the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital and lecture delivery and research activities are facilitated by the Institute of Sport Exercise and Health. Lecturers are nationally and internationally renowned, and are leading clinicians, researchers and writers in Performing Arts Medicine.

Who can apply?

We welcome students from diverse clinical backgrounds including medicine, physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic medicine, manual medicine, nursing, sports or athletic therapy. For the Postgraduate Certificate we also welcome psychologists, speech therapists and performance scientists. If a professional background is not mentioned, we will review the application on an individual basis.
