One Day Essential: Acute Care Skills in General Practice

Provided by

About the course

*This conference provides GPs with an update on Basic Life Support Skills to meet current Resuscitation Council guidelines*

General Practitioners are in the front line of the NHS and encounter all varieties of medical emergencies on a daily basis. This is both in hours and in the out of hours settings. An acute illness presentation in general practice can be chaotic, so it is vital that the correct diagnosis is made and the appropriate treatment is initiated in a safe and timely manner.

This one day essential will aim to:

  • Improve confidence in managing acutely unwell patients
  • Developing clinicians recognition of red flags when dealing with unstable patients
  • Update of emergencies that may present in general practice
  • Include urgent and challenging problems seen in general practice e.g. palliative, medical emergencies
  • Experience Simulation workshops
  • Refresh knowledge of evidence based guidelines
  • Includes Basic Life Support and Defibrillator refresher

The course will include lectures and workshops. The workshops have been designed using manikins to simulate the acutely unwell patient in primary care. This allows us to create an interactive and immersive learning experience.

This is the first RCGP course that uses simulation to aid with professional development. The experience of simulation allows reflection and peer discussion to take place within a small group setting. This is what makes simulation rewarding, confidence-boosting and thought provoking. Participants leave with practical solutions that could reduce risk and improve safety in their clinical practice.
