One Day Essential End of Life Care

Provided by

About the course

This event will be chaired by Dr Sarah Mitchell, Generalist Lead for Palliative and End of Life Care, West Midlands Clinical Networks and Clinical Senate, NHS England - West Midlands.

500,000 people die every year in the UK, and the number is rising. GPs and the primary care team play a pivotal role in the delivery of palliative and end of life care (PEOLC) to all patients regardless of their age and medical condition. As GPs, we deliver PEOLC with limited time resource and in the context of increasing demands to avoid hospital admissions as people near the end of their lives. Although we work alongside specialist palliative care services, these can be variable in terms of both availability and type of service provision. GPs often express a desire for more training and expertise in this area.

This one day essential course aims to provide a comprehensive update in PEOLC for GPs including:

·  The need for palliative and end of life care in primary care for patients with malignant and non-malignant disease, including frailty

·   A practical update on symptom control and care of the person and family at the time of death

·   An introduction to public health approaches in palliative care

·   Debate and discussion about how we can manage care planning in primary care in the most effective manner for patients, families and the primary care team.

Delegates will leave the day with refreshed knowledge, insights and ideas which will be of immediate relevance to their clinical practice.

Topics to include:

  • Priorities in Palliative Care Frailty, geriatrics and palliative care
  • Symptom control and Anticipatory prescribing
  • Caring at the time of death
  • Advance Care Planning
  • Public Health Approaches in Palliative Care
  • Palliative and End of Life Care in Primary Care
