Perioperative Medicine MSc

Developed and delivered by an international faculty of subject matter experts, this programme aims to train a new generation of health professional to shape, lead and improve surgical patient care.  

 
Delivered completely online, the patient’s surgical journey is broken down into eight compulsory modules designed to explore surgical risk, medical interventions and outcomes for those patients contemplating, undergoing or recovering from surgery.
 
Who is this course for?
 
This programme is ideal for healthcare professionals involved in the management of surgical patients who wish to further their understanding of the growing body of knowledge that underpins and informs our approach to patient care. Students have included nurse managers, exercise physiologists, surgical ICU nurses and doctors in training from a range of base-specialties from all over the world.

Teaching and Assessment
 
The programme is completely online and can be taken in a flexible time period of one to five years. Our bespoke Learning Management System will provide you with an appealing, uncluttered and intuitive learning space. As you progress we support you to transform what you have learnt from eight modules into your own personal research enquiry.
 
Masters students will be given the opportunity to participate in supervised research within the Centre for Perioperative Medicine. There will also be an opportunity for you to undertake your dissertation study in Global Health located in our partner institution in Sri Lanka. We encourage original research, systematic review and projects involving Improvement Science for improved clinical care.  
 
You will be expected to read, make notes, interact with both the summative and formative written questions and engage with peers to explore alternative ideas and solutions to questions posed by the faculty members. There will be audio-visual materials to aid learning and an opportunity to question faculty members on specific issues raised.
 
Careers
 
As a graduate you will have an in-depth knowledge of the current evidence base in the field of Perioperative Medicine and as such be prepared to enter the work place and occupy strategic leadership roles at various stages in the surgical patient journey.  A UCL Masters qualification is held in high regard and is of clear benefit when looking to occupy a senior clinical/management role, while giving the necessary grounding, core skills and knowledge to be considered highly trained in Perioperative Medicine issues.
 
Successful Perioperative Medicine graduates have gone on to positions of leadership in the field, including a Clinical Professorship and numerous consultants leading perioperative medicine services, several successful MSc students have gone on to undertake MD/PhD studies with us.
