Musculoskeletal Science MSc

This programme is designed to give you, in a multidisciplinary setting, a holistic view of musculoskeletal science, and develop your understanding of the burden of musculoskeletal conditions which have an enormous and growing impact worldwide and within the UK NHS framework. The musculoskeletal disorders covered include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fracture related to osteoporosis and low back pain, and soft and hard tissue damages.

It will provide you with essential knowledge of human musculoskeletal system to enable you to understand the musculoskeletal disorders and clinical challenges in treating these disorders and arm you with skills in research and knowledge-acquirement to allow you to undertake independent practice in dealing with multidisciplinary musculoskeletal problems emphasized within NHS framework and in alignment with the Bone and Joint decade.

Who is this course for?

The programme is ideally to medical trainees or GPs who wish to take their career to the next level in orthopaedics and sports medicine, as well as osteopaths and complementary medicine professionals; nurses, physiotherapists and other allied health professionals; engineering or biological science graduates who wish to develop their career in the healthcare sector.

Teaching and Assessment

The programme director is Dr Chaozong Liu who has developed a new osteochondral scaffold with a patented biomedical structure to encourage consistent cartilage fill. The scaffold has shown promising results, by Professor Noel Fitzpatrick of the Channel 4 TV series Supervet, where it was used to treat a large osteochondral defect. 

The programme is delivered through a combination of taught lectures, seminars, skills-laboratory sessions, tutorials, group project work and workshops. Assessment is multi-dimensional, through online MCQs, coursework, and the dissertation and viva-voce. Throughout the programme, you are encouraged to undertake independent reading both to supplement and consolidate what is being taught and to broaden your individual knowledge and understanding of the subject.

Careers

Upon graduation you will be equipped to make a strong contribution to the development of musculoskeletal services. You could progress your career in the healthcare sector, regenerative medicine, the medical device industry, bio-industry, regulatory bodies, as well as the academic community. Graduates from this programme have gone on to work as design engineers, orthopaedic doctors, trial co-ordinators and radiotherapists, as well as continuing in academia.
