About the course

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow’s seventh annual stroke conference will provide an opportunity for practicing clinicians to update their knowledge in the rapidly changing field of stroke care.

Experts will be providing updates in a range of important stroke topics including thrombectomy, PFO closure, carotid disease management and rehabilitation. The conference will also include interactive learning via the stroke masterclasses; workshops and discussions covering a variety of key topics and current areas of debate.

Masterclasses:

Option A – Basic Stroke Imaging

An interactive workshop on stroke imaging focusing on the basics of CT and MRI interpretation. This is suitable for foundation doctors, nurses, medical students and allied professions to stroke medicine not familiar with viewing imaging in daily practice.

Option B – Advanced Stroke Imaging

An interactive workshop focussing on the essentials of modern CT and MRI brain imaging in stroke. Covering basic image review techniques, recognition of early ischaemic changes and stroke mimics.

Option C – Neurovascular Imaging

An interactive workshop focussing on CTA and MRA interpretation of stroke pathology including atherosclerotic disease, dissection and vasculitis. This workshop will be suitable for trainees and consultants who view vascular imaging in their daily practice. This workshop will not have an overlap of cases with Option D for those wishing to attend both C and D.

Option D – Imaging for Mechanical Thrombectomy

An interactive workshop on the interpretation of CT and CTA in patients which may be suitable for referral for mechanical thrombectomy. Focus will be on ASPECT scoring and assessing CTA for large vessel occlusion. There will also be examples shown of the use of CT Perfusion. This will be suitable for trainees and consultants who will be involved in referring patients for thrombectomy.

Option E – Acute Stroke and TIA - recognition and initial management

This interactive workshop will support delegates' in the recognition and initial management of patients with a possible diagnosis of acute stroke and TIA. Classroom style teaching supported by interactive scenarios will provide participants with a framework to help recognise stroke from its common mimics and facilitate speedy assessment for thrombolysis. This workshop is aimed at anyone with limited experience of assessing acute patients with possible stroke/TIA e.g. junior medical trainees, A&E or stroke unit nursing staff and AHPs with an interest in acute assessment.

Option F – Case based discussions

Managing complex stroke cases can be challenging. In this session an expert panel will take you through three of the most common, yet difficult cases to manage. This session will focus on cases with diabetes and this session will also be interactive.
