The 2-day Advanced course of illustrated lectures covers a wide range of problems seen on neonatal brain ultrasound examinations.  It is aimed at neonatologists, sonographers and radiologists and is ideal for those with some experience of neonatal cranial ultrasound who want to be updated on what can be achieved with cranial ultrasound in terms of diagnosis and prognosis.

Delegates may book onto the 1-day Basics course, the 2-day Advanced course or all 3 days together.

Neonatal Cranial Ultrasound – ADVANCED, Thursday 23 – Friday 24 March 2017

The following topics will be covered:

  • How to scan a baby:  standard cranial ultrasound examination and how to use supplemental acoustic windows
  • Ultrasound imaging of brain maturation: normal findings versus pathological changes
  • MRI in neonatal brain imaging
  • Preterm: haemorrhage, PHVD and outcome
  • The neonatal cerebellum: normal development and injury
  • Preterm: white matter injury
  • Metabolic disease - tumours/neurocutaneous disorders
  • Assessing asphyxial damage in the term infant
  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Term focal lesions
  • Sinus venous thrombosis and associated lesions
  • Doppler measurements of CBFV: how to do and when to use
  • Infections
  • Protocols for imaging preterm infants of different gestational ages, term infants with HIE, fits, dysmorphisms, floppiness
  • Image interpretation assessment quiz
  • Case examples - open discussion session.  (Delegates are encouraged to bring their own examples of images they have found interesting or perhaps difficult to interpret for group discussion).
