his one day Consultant-led course is intended to teach urology trainees to understand the essential aspects and challenges encountered during difficult catheterisations. Under direct supervision, the participants will be taught how to use the different catheters using a safe algorithmic approach. The day will be interspersed with pertinent lectures and hand-on workshop. 

Aims:
  • To teach participants about the principles of catheterisation and allow them to practice how to insert difficult catheters
  • To ensure that the participants understand the common pitfalls and complications during catheterisations and how to manage them
  • To increase awareness about the current guidelines and legal aspects surrounding catheterisations
  • To help the participants competently perform suprapubic catheterisation using various types of catheters make them aware of common pitfalls, and educate them about its current status
  • To give delegates a safer algorithmic approach to failed catheterisation
Learning objectives:
  • To ensure that the participants know how to manage common pitfalls and complications during catheterisations
  • To be able to describe different catheter materials, types, sizes, and the indications and contraindications in performing a ‘straightforward’ catheterisation.
  • To know about the principles behind SPC catheterisation, understand the indications/contraindications surrounding SPC insertion, and how to confidently perform the procedure,
  • To be aware of other, more unusual techniques in performing difficult catheterisations
  • To give delegates a safer algorithmic approach to failed catheterisation and how to deal with abnormal urethral anatomy
  • To increase awareness about the current guidelines and legal aspects around catheters

  • Trainees in Urology: CT1 – ST5 level
  • General surgical trainees with an interest in urology
  • Trust doctors, Clinical fellows, Research fellows and Junior specialists in Urology
