Multiple sclerosis has become a treatable disease but the treatments are not cures and bring risk. MS has clearly defined diagnostic criteria but remains largely a retrospective diagnosis. MRI is seen by non-specialists as the gold standard for diagnosis but it lacks sensitivity and specificity.
The new treatments have made MS a sub specialty for some neurologists but everyone with MS should have contact with their GP. The link with specialist care varies between general neurology and MS specialists in tertiary care, but there remain many people diagnosed with MS who have no regular specialist contact.
What will this session cover?
The key distinctions between relapsing and progressive MS, and the limits of certainty of those diagnoses, together with management options, particularly those impinging on primary care, will be presented.
