About the course

Master of Advanced Minimally-Invasive Surgery (MIS)

This programme is unique and world-leading in its innovative approach to teaching laparoscopic, robotic, endoscopic and microsurgical surgery using Virtual and Augmented Reality models.

Surgery is experiencing a technological revolution and it is essential for all practitioners to embrace these advances. We are the only UK institution to offer innovative telestration technology, allowing you to directly interact with master surgeons across the globe, learning operative skills as well as observing the latest procedures, and critically appraising surgical techniques in real-time.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideally suited to graduate students who hold a recognised medical degree and have undergone basic surgical training or equivalent in a surgical specialty eg MRCS or MRCOG. A PGCert is available on completion of the core modules for students who hold a medical degree but are yet to complete basic surgical training.

Teaching and Assessment

You will be taught by academic surgeons who are experts in their field and recognised as thought leaders in surgery, potentially including Manish Chand, Professor Wexner, Professor Lacy, Richard Brady. The technology integrated into this programme will allow you to be mentored and assessed by surgeons in Europe and the USA whilst being based at the Bloomsbury Campus, using state-of-the-art telestration equipment. The module structure will also allow you to directly work with experienced academics and develop projects that will be clinically applicable to your future career. The international, multidisciplinary faculty will allow you to directly engage with some of the key opinion leaders in surgery and tailor your practise to be at the forefront of modern surgery.

You will be assessed using a variety of methods. Modules with a predominantly practical component combine in-course assessment, performance in discussions and practical exercises. Technical modules are assessed via formative direct observation with a summative assessment at the end of the module. Formative assessments will be based on interim reviews within the module and assessments will be made of individuals rather than group work.

Careers

Whatever your chosen career pathway, this programme will enable you to advance to a higher specialised level. As well as gaining truly cutting-edge knowledge in this increasingly essential field, the extended research project will enable you to gain many transferable skills in conducting research in clinical and medical science and give you an up-to-date perspective on trends in the causality, diagnosis, management and innovative treatment of stroke.
