About the course

This programme will equip you with a critical understanding of how nanotechnology can be harnessed for the improved detection and treatment of disease.

Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine are rapidly expanding fields with the potential to revolutionise modern medicine. This cross-disciplinary programme provides you with a robust scientific understanding in these fields, combined with a "hands-on" practical and translational focus.

The MSc in Nanotechnology & Regenerative Medicine has a clinical focus ensuring it addresses real medical needs. You have the opportunity to learn about new technologies that are transforming modern medicine: nanomedicine; tissue engineering and stem cell technologies. You will also develop research skills by joining interdisciplinary active research teams.

Who is this course for?

This programme is designed to be accessible to students from a large number of disciplines, ranging from medicine and biology to physics, chemistry and engineering, giving you an in-depth understanding of the key aspects of this rapidly developing field, and establishing a skillset which will take you into industry or further research with a specialist skill set.

Teaching and Assessment

As part of this programme you are encouraged to interact with the wider regenerative medicine and nanotechnology community by becoming members of the London Network of Regenerative Medicine (LRMN), the UCL Stem Cell network, the British Society of Nanomedicine (BSNM) and attending specially arranged seminars.

This programme will be delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, group work, abstract writing, practical (laboratory) reports, poster presentation, business case and grant applications and problem-solving workshops.  Your research project will consist of a dissertation and viva. Research project topics can include: nanoparticle targeted drug delivery, 3D printing organs, development of in vitro 3D tissue models for studying disease, skin and bone tissue engineering and functionalised scaffolds for directing stem cell differentiation.

Careers

You will receive individual advice about your career aspirations and seminars are arranged on a variety of career competencies including CV writing, writing research proposals and positive personal presentation. Networking with academics, clinicians and industry is encouraged and enabled throughout the programme.

You will gain the transferable laboratory, critical analytical and soft skills (such as science communication) necessary to pursue a scientific or clinical research career in the fields of nanomedicine, stem cell technologies, medical materials and regenerative medicine together with the broader biomedical industries. The programme has been running since 2009, with over 150 graduates and has become a respected programme within the field. Recent career destinations include:

  • PhDs (destinations include continuing within  UCL, Imperial College London, Oxford, Cambridge)
  • NHS hospitals in the UK
  • Biomedical research in industry
  • Biomedical consultancy
  • EU science advisory roles
