Overview:

Developed and delivered by experts in the field, our online portfolio of postgraduate qualifications has been designed for working professionals and those who wish to study flexibly without the requirement to attend an on-campus course.

The LLM and the MA cater to the training needs of professionals around the world. Study healthcare, ethics and law in a virtual learning environment. You will receive expert knowledge and understanding of healthcare, ethics and law, and the skills needed to apply them to real-world scenarios You will study a wide variety of ethical and legal issues, including autonomy, consent, refusal of treatment, organ and tissue transplantation and more.

This suite of courses is designed in a flexible format, supporting those who work in or seeking a career in healthcare law or ethics, allowing students to balance existing commitments with studying an academic qualification at The University of Manchester.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for healthcare and medical professionals and those with an interest in this area. The MA and LLM in Healthcare, Ethics and Law aim to bring students the highest quality of training in healthcare ethics and healthcare law in a flexible and interdisciplinary way, thus catering to the practical needs of healthcare and legal professionals and those in a related field.

Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of healthcare, ethics and law, and the skills needed to apply them to real world scenarios in a diverse range of contexts.

Admissions requirements:

Eligible students must hold a minimum Upper Second Class honours degree, or overseas equivalent in a relevant subject, such as medicine, law, philosophy, nursing, religious studies.

In exceptional circumstances, candidates who do not have a first degree, but who can demonstrate professional competence, may be admitted initially on to the Postgraduate Diploma and then for a transfer to the LLM or MA. Students are also able to top up their Postgraduate Diploma to a full Master’s degree within five years of initial registration.

Course Content

  • Medico-legal Problems
  • International Issues in Healthcare, Ethics and Law

Students must choose optional course units to a total value of 30 credits from the following list:

  • Law-based: Medicine, Law & Society; Mental Health Law & Policy
  • Ethics-based: Research Ethics; Ethics Genetics and Genomics

Students taking the LLM are required to study two law options.

Teaching and Assessment

You are provided with a comprehensive set of course materials at the beginning of each course unit. These interactive specifically designed materials introduce the issues and skills central to each unit and direct you to other study components such as further reading.

Each unit is supported by a virtual learning environment, where you can access all course materials, online reading lists, podcasts, and the University’s online library. You are encouraged to use the VLE to discuss issues raised in the course materials with your course tutor and fellow students.

Tutors are also available to provide one to one support by telephone, skype, email and face-to-face meetings. You will have access to a wide range of online resources to support your learning via the library website. There is an optional induction day on campus, at the start of the programme. In addition, an optional study day is held each year, at The University of Manchester, giving you an opportunity to meet tutors and colleagues face-to-face on campus.

At the end of each of the course units for our online course, you are required to submit an essay of 4,000 words (for course units to the value of 15 credits) or up to 6,000 words (for course units to the value of 30 credits). In addition, LLM/MA students must submit a supervised 12,000 to 15,000-word dissertation by independent research (60 credits). As a part-time student, you will undertake a dissertation in the summer months of year two. LLM students will undertake a predominately law-based dissertation.

Successful graduates of this course are able to progress within a wide variety of roles in the medical, legal and ethical fields. Graduates from previous years have, for example, proceeded to specialise in medico-legal practice and academic careers, and the degrees have enhanced the careers of healthcare professionals.
