This conference will be chaired by Dr Sarah Mitchell, Generalist Lead for Palliative and End of Life Care, West Midlands Clinical Networks and Clinical Senate, NHS England - West Midlands. The conference aims to provide practical guidance on improving end of life care in your practice and help you achieve a gold standard of care for all your patients nearing the end of life.
500,000 people die every year in the UK, and the number is rising. GPs and the primary care team play a pivotal role in the delivery of palliative and end of life care (PEOLC) to all patients regardless of their age and medical condition. As GPs, we deliver PEOLC with limited time resource and in the context of increasing demands to avoid hospital admissions as people near the end of their lives. Although we work alongside specialist palliative care services, these can be variable in terms of both availability and type of service provision. GPs often express a desire for more training and expertise in this area.
