Basic Skills in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmology Taster Day

About the course

This course is aimed at junior doctors who are interested in ophthalmology as a career or who see patients with ophthalmology complaints in primary care, including in an A&E and GP setting. It will be delivered by a group of dedicated specialty ophthalmology registrars.

It is a practical course which discusses basic examination techniques used in ophthalmology, providing delegates with the skills required to confidently assess and manage patients with common ophthalmic pathologies. 

The course comprises interactive lectures on ophthalmic history taking and examination in the morning, including common scenarios of anterior and posterior segment pathology. The afternoon will consist of small-group teaching in practical skills, which will enable delegates to develop skills in the following examination techniques: slit lamp examination of anterior and posterior segment; IOP measurement; direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy; pupil and eye movement assessment.
