This interactive two-day course focuses on preparing delegates for the viva (oral) component of the FRCS (Orth) in a friendly atmosphere. Delegates will work through a range of techniques to improve both oral skills and orthopaedic clinical examination skills.

Course Content

The course will cover a variety of topics, including:

 

  • Introduction to the FRCS (Orth) examination
  • Negotiating the requirements of the course
  • Clinical examination session – history taking
  • Introduction to positive critiquing

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the structure of the FRCS (Orth) exam
  • Explore a range of presented orthopaedic scenarios required for the FRCS (Orth) exam
  • Confidently demonstrate knowledge and understanding in an oral exam setting
  • Understand the use of positive critiquing
  • Recognise one's strongest areas of orthopaedic knowledge and identify the knowledge and techniques that require further development
  • Use the new skills in a workplace setting, benefitting day-to-day practice

Format

This fully interactive course combines practice oral exams with clinical examination skills on simulated patients. There will also be small group discussions.

              ST5-8 preparing for the oral FRCS (Orth) Examination

              Clinical Fellows

              Speciality Doctors

              Candidates preparing for the Joint Surgical Commission Fellowship Examination (JSCFE)

              The main audience for this course is candidates who are sitting the oral section of the examination imminently. However, it will also benefit those candidates who are beginning to prepare for the examination irrespective of passing the written section. This group will gain invaluable teaching and insight into the depth of knowledge needed as well as how to prepare for the examination over the coming months
