MSc/PGDip in Gastroenterology (online or classroom-based)
About the course
Our MSc and PGDip Gastroenterology programmes are designed as both an introduction and update in the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition. You can choose between attendance-based or online learning for either programme. You will gain knowledge and understanding in both basic science, and laboratory and clinical research techniques.
You will study:
- the basic science of gastroenterology
- clinical manifestations of common complaints of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract
- current and future options and techniques for diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and nutritional disorders
- principles of research including literature review, forming of hypothesis, planning and completion of methods, analysis and discussion of data (MSc only).
We have expert teaching staff; many of our clinical academics are internationally recognised in their fields and include researchers in adult gastroenterology (IBD, neurogastroenterology, coeliac disease, GI genetics, intestinal failure, tropical gastroenterology), adult hepatology (hepatitis, NAFLD), GI surgery, and paediatric gastroenterology (clinical trials, IBD, endoscopy, intestinal failure). Non-clinical academics and scientists include experts in immunology, genetics, cell biology, GI physiology and GI pharmacology.
- Six compulsory taught modules
- Either a 10,000-word research project or clinical case report

- Neurogastroenterology: Advanced Functional Gastro-Intestinal Diseases
- Paediatric and Adolescent Gastro-Intestinal and Liver Diseases, Gastro-Intestinal Infections
MSc elective modules:
- Clinical Research in Gastro-Intestinal Diseases (MSc only), OR
- Dissertation - Clinical Case Reports (MSc only)
MSc students will write up three case reports of patients from their clinical practice, or undergo thorough training in research methods including original research leading to submission of a dissertation and presentation of the data. These projects are almost always laboratory-based and are related to some aspect of gastroenterology, hepatology or nutrition. You will learn and develop skills including background reading, planning methods, doing the lab work, analysing, writing up, presenting and discussing the data. The skills you will learn on the laboratory-based projects are generic and can be readily applied to clinical or patient based research in the future.
Who is it for?
The programme is aimed at practising clinicians wishing to understand the sciences underpinning clinical diseases and their management in the area of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition.
A Medical degree (non-UK medical degrees marked on a grading scale must be equivalent to UK 2:2 degree). Those with a 2:2 or above at undergraduate level in a Science degree working as a Allied Health professional (such as Dietician, Physiologist) with at least one year experience will be considered on an individual basis.
Applicants with Medical or Science degrees below this level will be considered on an individual basis if there is strong evidence of relevant professional experience.
Professional experience of working in Gastroenterology is desirable.
