About the course

Overview

Queen Mary has an excellent reputation in emergency medicine, trauma surgery and critical care, and you’ll be taught by world-leading experts recognised for their cutting-edge research. You will be taught a wide range of fascinating topics such as diagnosis, pathophysiology, resuscitation and toxicology, while fine-tuning your existing knowledge on research methodology, legislation and ethics.

Resuscitation is a rapidly evolving area of medicine that crosses the boundaries of emergency medicine, intensive care medicine, anaesthesia, acute/trauma surgery and acute medicine. It is arguably evolving into a subspecialty of medical care. Early recognition of critical illness and appropriate resuscitation saves lives and reduces suffering for our patients. With this course we provide the skills for you to develop expertise in this field.

  • Part-time hours allows you to work alongside gaining a qualification
  • Acquire an understanding of specialised techniques applicable to your own research or advanced scholarship

Teaching

We offer an MSc, PGDip and (free) taster Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for you to develop your skills in this area under the guidance of an international faculty. The faculty includes specialists in emergency medicine, pre-hospital care, anaesthesia, intensive care, diagnostic imaging, acute medicine, cardiology, infectious disease, haematology, toxicology and trauma/acute surgery.

Our aim is to assist you in developing the skills to offer the highest standard of care to your patients and obtain a knowledge level to enable you to develop teaching and/or leadership roles in resuscitation medicine. This course incorporates teaching on diagnosis, resuscitation, pathophysiology, imaging, toxicology, CRM and pre-hospital care/mass casualty medicine under a single umbrella. You will also have the opportunity to cover topics in paediatric emergency medicine, and tactical, military, austere and operational medicine. The level of study and knowledge will go beyond most specialist exit exams.

Structure

The course is online, allowing you to study at your own pace and in your own time, enabling you to continue with your work commitments. We provide an excellent structured learning platform for trainees and specialists to develop skills in this area. Years 1 and 2 consist of 8 modules, each of 8 weeks. Each week 2-5 lectures are released, supplemented by weekly tutorials. Year 3 (MSc only) consists of an Independent Scientific Paper with a dedicated lecture training package, allowing you to develop specialist knowledge and insight on a topic of your choice, related to Emergency and Resuscitation Medicine. You may choose to organise your scientific paper in the form of a systematic review (with meta-analysis), narrative review, retrospective (medical-records) review, or prospective (low-risk) cohort study (e.g. education study).

Who is it for?

The course is designed for trainees and consultants in emergency, pre-hospital and acute medicine, advanced nurse practitioners and critical care paramedics who wish to advance their knowledge in resuscitation medicine. We welcome students from both overseas and the UK.
