About the course

This course will provide you with a critical appreciation of aspects of management of seriously unwell children following their acute presentation and initial care. This will include the stabilisation of the child for safe transportation and application of evidence-based medicine and leadership in critical care. You will investigate and appraise the delivery of paediatric critical care including the long term physical and psychological consequences.

Topics covered will include:

  • "The Golden Hour" – the initial resuscitation and stabilisation of paediatric critical care patients using a systems-based approach
  • "The Critical Care Continuum" – an evidence-based approach to the management of common critical care pathologies
  • "The Consequences We Reap" – a holistic review of the economical, psychological and physical sequelae of critical care for patients, their carers and staff

The course is part of a range of short courses spread throughout the academic year which are available both to students who are enrolled on the MSc Applied Paediatrics course and as stand-alone CPD accredited programmes for all healthcare professionals.
