Course description

This course for intercalating medical students comprises four taught modules and a research project. The taught modules are designed to give a solid foundation in qualitative and quantitative research, including study design, research methods, statistics, ethics and research governance. The research project is a substantial piece of practical work running throughout the course.

Clinical Medicine at Leicester was also ranked 18th in the world and 5th in the UK by the 2022 Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects . Working with national and international experts within their research fields, you will contribute a significant piece of research to your chosen discipline, often presenting your work at national and international conferences. You can conduct laboratory and in silico-based projects within the College of Life Sciences or more clinically focused projects in collaboration with colleagues at University Hospitals Leicester.

  • Modelling of scaphoid fractures working in collaboration with School of Engineering
  • Exploring how culture and religious factors influence patients undergoing chronic treatment
  • Piplloedema and nystagmus
  • Breast cancer and post radiotherapy chronic breast symptoms
  • Cardiac imaging and power models in aortic stenosis
  • Fluid assessment during labour
  • Impacts of adult autism diagnosis
  • Machine learning and prediction of sudden cardiac death

Entry requirements

Applications are welcomed for the MSc Medical Research from students who have successfully completed at least three years of a UK undergraduate medical degree at the time of starting the programme.

English Language Requirements

IELTS 7 - 7.5 or equivalent. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability . If you do not yet meet our requirements, our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help you to improve your English to the necessary standard.

If you are resident outside the UK and the Republic of Ireland, you will need to pay a deposit of £3,000 to secure your place. This will be subtracted from your total tuition fee.

Careers and employability

Completing an intercalated degree will provide you with high level analytical and research skills that are desirable when applying for SFP and specialty training places later on. Many intercalated degrees also provide you with the opportunity to present your work to the wider medical world and some students get to publish their work. This can also support SFP and specialty training applications and prepare you for higher research degrees (MD, PhD).
