Assessment of progress in labour is a vital skill to acquire and is an integral part of managing a woman in her labour.

A diagnosis of inadequate progress either in the first or second stage will allow management decisions to be made to avoid cases of prolonged labour and dystocia.

  • recognise dysfunctional labour when reviewing partograms
  • recognise the potential causes for dysfunctional labour
  • have a knowledge of management and counselling regarding vaginal birth after caesarean section (VBAC).

Dr Kirstin Silf MRCOG (2020, 2022)

Kirstin is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the University Hospital of Crosshouse in Ayrshire. Her special interests include high-risk obstetrics, ambulatory gynaecology and medical education. She has completed a postgraduate certificate in medical education through Dundee University, and supports both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the unit.

This course is intended to help clinicians gain core knowledge for O&G training and the MRCOG examinations. It can also be used by O&G consultants to refresh their knowledge of the area or for teaching.
