This course is part of the RCOG Core Knowledge series.

Neonatal medicine is a new and rapidly developing speciality, it's origns are as recent as the middle of the 20th century. During this short time, survival rates and outcomes for preterm neonates and other challenging neonatal conditions has improved markedly, and that progress continues. Neonatology was one of the first subspecialties to embrace the concept of evidence-based medicine, though much of day to day practice does not have that grounding and is experience based.

The aim of this course is to emphasise the importance of recognising the abnormal from the normal, as the transition from fetal to neonatal life poses potential complications that may affect the quality of life for the future.

The common neonatal problems covered in this course include:

  • prematurity
  • hypothermia
  • hypoglycaemia
  • asphyxia neonatorum
  • jaundice
  • transient tachypnoea of newborn
  • birth injuries.

When you have completed this course, you will be able to:

  • understand fetal circulation and the physiologic changes in fetal–neonatal transition
  • distinguish abnormal transition from fetal to extrauterine life
  • value the importance of the Apgar score
  • understand and perform routine examination of a newborn
  • acknowledge the importance of early breastfeeding
  • identify and deal with common neonatal problems.

Dr Mullan is a Neonatal GRID trainee in the West of Scotland.

Dr Allan Jackson (2019)
Dr Jackson is a consultant neonatologist in the Princess Royal Maternity Hospital, Glasgow and the ScotSTAR neonatal transport service.

This course is intended to help clinicians gain core knowledge for O&G training and the MRCOG examinations. It can also be used by O&G consultants to refresh their knowledge of the area or for teaching.
