About the course
This course is part of the RCOG Core Knowledge series.
Sepsis exists on a continuum of severity ranging from infection and bacteraemia to sepsis and septic shock, which can lead to multiple organ dysfunction and death.
The World Health Organization (WHO) developed a consensus definition of maternal sepsis in 2017 based on systematic review and expert consultation, stating that:
'Maternal sepsis is a life-threatening condition defined as organ dysfunction resulting from infection during pregnancy, childbirth, post-abortion, or postpartum period.'
For each maternal sepsis death, an estimated 50 women have life-threatening morbidity from sepsis.
While adverse outcomes from maternal sepsis have improved over the last 20 years, it remains the third most common cause of maternal death.
When you have completed this course, you will be able to:
- recite the common causes of postpartum infection
- appreciate the risk factors that may result in postpartum sepsis
- recite measures for prevention and control of group A streptococcal infection
- clinically assess a postpartum woman presenting with signs of infection
- ensure appropriate management of women with common postpartum infections
- understand the consequences of delayed or inadequate treatment
- appreciate the value of liaison with colleagues from other specialties in very unwell women or women with unusual presentations

She earned her primary medical qualification and completed her postgraduate training in India. With two decades of experience, she has worked across various healthcare environments in both India and the UK.
