This course is part of the RCOG Core Knowledge series.
Chemotherapy continues to have an increasing role in the modern management of gynaecological malignancy. This tutorial starts by providing trainees with an easy to understand, practical introduction to oncology and chemotherapy. There is a detailed explanation of the mechanism of action and the side-effect profile of all the chemotherapy drugs used to treat gynaecological cancer. Finally, there is a review of the role of chemotherapy in the management of epithelial ovarian cancer, germ cell ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, uterine sarcoma, cervical, vulval and fallopian tube cancer. Completion of this tutorial will guarantee comprehensive knowledge of how chemotherapy is used to treat women with gynaecological malignancy.
When you have completed this course you will be able to:
- explain the meaning of commonly used oncology terms
- perform an assessment of how suitable a person is for chemotherapy treatment
- assess radiological response to chemotherapy
- calculate the dose of chemotherapy (please not this is beyond the level required for the Part 2 MRCOG)
- list the common toxicities of chemotherapy and explain how they are managed
- describe the mode of action, side effects and administration of the main chemotherapy drugs used in gynaecological cancer
- define the role of chemotherapy in epithelial ovarian, germ cell ovarian, endometrial, uterine sarcoma, cervical, vulval and fallopian tube cancer
