About the course

After completing this module, you should have the knowledge and confidence to:

  • Understand what suicidal ideation is and its significance and know when and how to ask patients about suicidal thoughts
  • Understand what self harm is, its causes and its relation to suicide and be confident to take a competent history following self harm
  • Be able to identify symptoms of serious mental illness including depression and psychosis
  • Manage the most common type of overdose (paracetamol)
  • Assess a patient’s mental capacity and know how to approach a patient refusing essential treatment
  • Understand the basic principles of the UK Mental Capacity Act and the Mental Health Act
  • Have an awareness of the long term management of patients following self harm and/or suicidal ideation.
